Introduction of solid food is one of the biggest steps in your baby’s life. When your infant starts on solid food, you would be aware of what kind of food should be given. But do you know that you need to avoid certain types of food? You need to be aware of what foods to be kept on hold until they turn one as they could cause medical issues. Read below to know what foods you need to avoid giving your baby under age one and why.
Fruits:
Though berries like strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries are rich sources of vitamin C it is better to limit their intake till the baby turns one. This is because the berries have choking hazard and they are allergenic foods. Pineapple is another fruit to avoid since it is acidic causing rashes around the baby’s mouth. Oranges are great source of vitamins but they are highly acidic which sometimes results in rashes in the mouth and anal region. It may also cause reflux cough. Papaya can be given to babies in very small quantities since eating large quantities of papaya can cause stomach aches.
Vegetables:
Babies under the age of one find it difficult to chew and digest lettuce. So it is better not to give it to them. Peas and potatoes also have a high choking risk in babies. Onions result in colic in infants. Sweet potatoes can cause vomiting, indigestion, and diarrhea.
Honey:
Infants under the age of one should never be given honey in any form since it contains a bacteria that produces toxins that result in constipation, poor sucking, muscle weakness, and in severe cases even paralysis.
Shellfish:
Shellfish is another highly allergenic food that has to be avoided. (Shellfish includes shrimp, clam, crab). Some fishes also have high mercury content (Shark) which causes side effects in babies like digestive issues, delayed development, blindness, and seizures (commonly known as fits)
Cow’s milk:
The baby should feed on breastmilk or formula until age one since cow’s milk is difficult to digest. Cow’s milk contains a high amount of protein which is sensitive for the baby’s intestine and kidneys to handle.
Chocolates:
Since chocolates contain little caffeine and higher amounts of sugar it is not an ideal food for infants.
Egg whites:
Though egg whites are a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals, giving them in large quantities to babies results in digestive issues such as diarrhea, irritation, and rashes.
Peanut (Includes peanut butter):
They are tasty, healthy, and full of protein but they have a high choking hazard. Babies also could be allergic to peanuts in case the family had a history of allergy. About 2 percent of infants suffer from a peanut allergy and it causes them a life-threatening situation if consumed.
