This morning I got a message from a fellow woman follower that read “Every day we eat rice in the afternoon and chapatti in the night, every night there will be leftover rice which my mother will server me and for herself but never to my father or brother. The men in my family always enjoy fresh food, in fact only hot chapattis at night’.

After reading this message I was not surprised because this is the story in many Indian households.
There is a lot of patriarchy behind this. Women for ages have been grown up to think that they are inferior to men in the house and somehow this has gotten to the very base of eating culture-the best being served to the men.

I had grown up noticing elder women never giving any priority to themselves in-fact my mother law does it, she takes pride in eating the leftovers and giving only the best to the men, though sometimes I bear the burn of it, I cannot blame her because that was how she was raised to believe, it takes a lot to get it out of them because it’s so deep-rooted in them from a young age.

The movie, “the great Indian kitchen” shows this in a raw way which will ring a bell to women of this generation but I often wonder if it will strike any difference with the elder community.

Another 50 years down the line this might not be the case mommies

If you decide to be the change
If you grow up your son or daughter without any inequality
If you decide to give equal priory to yourself in par with your spouse
