While you may be excited to see your little one it is important to know what to expect and what has to be done before getting into labor. In this article, we will explore the top ten things to be done before getting into labor.

1. Know when to go to the hospital
Labor is unpredictable. For some, it is shorter and for some, it is longer and it doesn’t always go with a guideline. When you are in the early stage of labor you can stay at home, rest, walk around or take a warm shower. Timing your contraction helps you to know when it is time to get to the hospital. Knowing the warning signs will also help you to know when to rush to the hospital.

2. Make plans
Pack your bag few weeks before your due date. Have a checklist with you and cross-check before you leave your home on whether you have packed all the essential items. It is also necessary to check things like whether your car seat is comfortable and whether your home is set for welcoming the newborn beforehand. Discuss with your family members prior what kind of assistance you will be needing. Financially arrange sufficient funds. Plan things like your maternity leave, returning to work, and breastfeeding at the workplace.

3. Be ready for changes
Have a birth plan which includes things like pain relief, labor induction, etc. But be mentally prepared to be flexible with your birth plan since things don't always go in the way we expect during labor. Certain complications during labor can push you to have an alternative birthing process and you must make yourself ready to accept it.

4. Stay calm
When your due date is near, you will be anxious and worried. But you must stay calm. Chill by watching tv, reading a good book, spending time with friends, writing a letter to your baby, or listening to good music even on your due date until your contraction starts.

5. Wear something comfortable
Pick up and wear a dress that makes you feel comfortable during labor. Wearing a tight dress makes you feel uncomfortable during contractions. Since BP will be checked often and there could be frequent abdominal & vaginal examinations during labor, wear a dress which will be comfortable for the above examinations.

6. Eat right
Have a moderate amount of liquid and light meal that is rich in protein and easily digestible before your labor begins. Having a huge meal might cause vomiting, discomfort and even result in diarrhea.

7. Stay active
Keep moving and stay active in the last few days before your due date. Exercise regularly for a minimum of 30 minutes. Involve in aerobic activities such as walking, gentle yoga, or even swimming. Do consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program.

8. Take a hospital tour
Visit your birthing center and take a tour around the room. Get used to what facilities are available. Fill out all the paperwork required beforehand.

9. Get a massage
Getting massage therapy around 38 weeks keeps you relaxed and also helps you to sleep better. Do consult with your doctor before getting any massage since certain techniques could trigger contractions.

10. Find a good caregiver
If you choose to have a doula communicate with them prior on what support you expect, and they will be providing during the birthing process. This will help you to stay more confident and eases your fear and anxiety.
