For most of Indian history, the birth of a baby was an activity strictly inside the women’s sphere. Dad was left to pace around outside, waiting for news that his progeny had entered the world and he had officially become a father. His primary duty was to hand out sweets to his family and inform everyone of the news once the nurse bounded through the lobby doors to exclaim, “It’s a boy/girl!”

These days, most couples choose to have the baby’s father right by the mother’s side throughout the whole birthing process. Some men (and some women, I suppose) likely aren’t that keen on this new responsibility. For me personally, I think every husband must be with his wife during labour and birth. I think he ought to be there during her most challenging times; isn’t this one of the essential principles of marriage-being there for each other during your tough times.

Just because it’s a relatively new manly role, doesn’t mean you can’t ace it.

Here is a picture of dad Raj who did an excellent job by being with his wife Suhanya Shalini throughout labour and birth at the women’s centre, Coimbatore. I was privileged to see in person how he was there, constantly reassuring her that it was going to be ok, giving water, helping her apply her lip balm as her lips became dry because of the breathing exercises, holding her hand and walking her to the bathroom, massage to ease the pain, he was that fantastic birth partner.
He made an effort and came for the couple session to make informed decisions during labour. Please remember he is no less of a man just because he did all this for his wife and baby. Kudos to this incredible dad!

I have to mention that Raj’s parents supported him in helping his wife during this crucial hour.
I pray that every man should be like Raj during labor and birth.
